New Coach for Union's Keepers:

Marcel Höttecke Steps up to the First Team

The coaching staff of Union’s men's first team for the new season is complete. Goalkeeping coach Marcel Höttecke is moving from the academy to the professionals under head coach Mauro Lustrinelli. The 39-year-old succeeds Michael Gspurning, who coached the Union's keepers for almost nine years.

A Familiar Voice for the Goalkeepers

Höttecke has been working at 1. FC Union Berlin's youth training centre since summer 2024, where he was responsible for the U-19's goalkeepers. Frederik Rönnow, Matteo Raab, and Carl Klaus are already familiar with his work as, in recent seasons, he took on training and match preparation for the keepers several times and was closely involved with the first team. The holder of the UEFA A Goalkeeper's License already has extensive experience in both the professional and youth sectors. Two years at VfL Osnabrück were followed by three years at Chemnitzer FC, and several more in the youth setup of Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he coached goalkeepers from U-14s to U-23s.

As a towering, 6'5" stopper, he was, himself, in goal for1. FC Union Berlin from 2010 to 2013, making 19 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga during that time. His superb performance in the famous 2-1 derby victory at the Berlin Olympiastadion on 05.02.2011 remains unforgettable. In 2012, he was voted Unioner of the Year by the fans for his performances.

The views on the decision

“I am very happy about the trust and the opportunity to work daily at the Alten Försterei again," said a delighted Höttecke on his promotion. "Union was a defining chapter for me as a player, and the last few months in the NLZ have shown me how special this club continues to be. Now I want to contribute to ensuring that our goalkeepers continue to perform at the highest level and that we are successful together.”

“Marcel knows Union, our processes, and our content, and he has shown in recent years that he works professionally and meticulously," said Horst heldt, Union's director of men's prfessional football. "His experiences in youth and professional football make him an ideal choice. We are convinced that he will further develop our goalkeepers and provide important impulses within the coaching team.”
