A New Chapter in Belgium:
László Bénes Transfers to KAA Gent
Following his spell on loan in Turkey, László Bénes is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin permanently and will join the Belgian top-flight club KAA Gent for the upcoming season.
The 28-year-old midfielder transferred to the Alte Försterei in the summer of 2024 and is now taking on a new career step.
Super-sub qualities and match practice abroad
In his only season at Union, the Slovakian international played 25 competitive matches in the red and white Union jersey, scoring twice and providing one assist. His impact a super-sub remains particularly memorable, securing important Bundesliga points for Union with goals immediately after coming on as a substitute in both the opening match of the 24/25 season against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and the home match against SV Werder Bremen.
To gain more playing time, the technically skilled left-footer subsequently moved on loan to Turkish top-flight club Kayserispor. Bénes quickly established himself as a regular in central midfield, making 32 appearances in the Süper Lig, scoring seven goals and assisting two more. Overall, he was on the pitch for more than 2,500 competitive minutes for the club, making him one of the most consistent attacking players on his team.
With these performances, the 42-time international recommended himself for a new challenge, which he now finds in Belgium.
Reactions to the farewell
“I am grateful for the time at Union. Even though it was short, I felt comfortable from day one and experienced some special moments. The support from the fans and the trust from the team meant a lot to me. The loan in Turkey helped me get back to regular playing and find my rhythm. Now I’m looking forward to the new task in Gent,” explained Bénes on his departure.
Horst Heldt, director of men's professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, said meanwhile: “László always showed professionalism with us and made some important contributions with his qualities. After his loan, an opportunity has arisen for him to reorient himself long-term. We thank him for his commitment in the Union jersey and wish him all the best and much success in Gent on his future path.”
