Five Union players represent their national teams

Although the Bundesliga is already on its summer break, some of the professional players on the 1. FC Union Berlin men's team still have one last chapter to play this season: international matches with their national teams. Five players from the Bundesliga squad have been nominated for the next international match period.

The Nominees

Central defender Leopold Querfeld has once again been nominated for the Austrian national team. Querfeld already played in the UEFA Nations League play-off against Serbia in March, but his team suffered a 1-3 defeat after the first and second legs. Now, two matches are on the agenda as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Romania and the small republic of San Marino.

Slovakian midfielder László Bénes also recently played in the Nations League, where his team was eliminated after a goalless draw in the first leg and a 0-1 defeat in extra time in the second leg against Slovenia. Before the football break, Slovakia will now play two friendly matches against Greece and Israel.

For András Schäfer and the Hungarian national team, the Nations League qualifiers were more straightforward: two clear defeats (1-3 and 0-3) against Turkey were a bitter setback. The aim now is to regain confidence in the two upcoming friendly matches.

Croatia's Nations League campaign ended bitterly: After a 2-0 win in the first leg against France, the Vatreni lost the return leg by the same score – and then lost 4-5 on penalties. Right-back Josip Juranović did not play but hopes to get some minutes in the national jersey in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Although the 32-year-old will be leaving Union in the summer and has already been given a send-off, the season is not over for him yet: Jérôme Roussillon is in Guadeloupe's squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the USA. In the group stage, the team will face Guatemala, Jamaica and Panama. This is only Guadeloupe's sixth appearance in the tournament – the last time they reached the quarterfinals was in 2009.
