After 65 Games for Union:

Hollerbach Moves to Mainz

Benedict Hollerbach is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin and joining 1. FSV Mainz 05 for the coming season. The 24-year-old striker will compete in the UEFA Conference League with his new side.

Speed, determination and commitment in the Union shirt

Hollerbach laced up his first football boots at the age of four at TSV Tutzing. This was followed by spells in the youth departments of TSV 1860 München and FC Bayern, where he played up to the U19s, winning the German B-Junior Championship with the U17s in 2017. After a year at VfB Stuttgart, the attacking player moved to SV Wehen Wiesbaden in 2020. There, he quickly developed into a key player and became a promotion hero with 14 goals and five assists in the 2022/23 season – crowned by three goals in the relegation play-off against DSC Arminia Bielefeld.

In the summer of 2023, he made the move to the Bundesliga with 1. FC Union Berlin. Although Hollerbach started as a substitute, he fought his way into the starting line-up under coach Nenad Bjelica. On matchday 14, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Four more followed, including a decisive goal on the last matchday against SC Freiburg, which played a key role in securing the club's place in the league.

Hollerbach did not miss a single Bundesliga match last season, playing in all 34 games, scoring nine goals and setting up three more; he had become a real stalwart in the Union attack. After a total of 65 competitive games in the Union shirt, in which he scored 14 goals and provided four assists, he is now looking for a new sporting challenge.

Reactions to the transfer

"I had two incredibly intense and formative years in Berlin – both on the pitch and on a personal level,” said Hollerbach on the completion of his move. “Union gave me the opportunity to prove myself at Bundesliga level and I am grateful for everything I have learned here. The fans, the stadium, the team – it was something very special. It's not easy for me to leave this club, but I'm looking forward to the new challenge in Mainz and the opportunity to prove myself on the European stage."

Horst Heldt, 1. FC Union Berlin’s director of men’s professional football, added to this, saying: “Benedict has continuously developed during his time with us and always given his all for the club. He was a player who always worked with great intensity – both in games and in training. We would like to thank him for his commitment to 1. FC Union Berlin and wish him all the best for the future.”
