Farewell After 102 Years:
Thank You and Goodbye, FuWo
With today's edition, Fußball-Woche bids farewell to its readers. Berlin's dedicated football publication will relase no more issues after 102 years.
Since founding in 1923, FuWo has represented the diversity of Berlin football. Whether high-class competition or kickabouts, professional or amateur football, men's and later also women's teams: the goal was to comprehensively inform and expertly comment on the results and statistics of as many leagues as possible. For many decades, Fußball-Woche has been one of the most important sources of information for football enthusiasts - spectators and players - in Berlin and the surrounding area.
“This Monday is a sad day, as it seals the end of this traditional newspaper, despite all efforts. Over the past years, we have truly tried everything to withstand the general cost pressure and the declining demand for press publications – unfortunately, we have failed,” explained Horst Bläsig, long-time editor-in-chief and most recently publisher of Fußball-Woche. “I would like to expressly thank 1. FC Union Berlin for their extensive and reliable support over the past years, which has been very helpful to us. I wish the club all the best and I am sure that it will continue to play an outstanding role in Berlin football.”
“I am very sorry that we were unable to open up a viable future perspective for the Fußball-Woche. In FuWo, a piece of Berlin football culture is disappearing, the loss of which we will probably only gradually become truly aware of. On behalf of 1. FC Union Berlin, I would like to thank Horst Bläsig and his collaborators for the fair and knowledgeable reporting and for the dedicated efforts to preserve the FuWo. We will miss it,” said Dirk Zingler, president of 1. FC Union Berlin.
