Goalkeeper Takes on a New Challenge
Yannic Stein Joins Hansa Rostock
Goalkeeper Yannic Stein is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin. The 21-year-old is joining F.C. Hansa Rostock with immediate effect.
A Berlin talent on his way to his next challenge
Stein left the Viktoria 1889 Berlin youth academy for Union in the summer of 2019 and has since progressed through all of Union Berlin’s youth teams. From an early stage he was included in first-team training sessions and, from 2021, was frequently named in the matchday squad for Bundesliga and European fixtures.
To gain valuable playing time at senior level, the goalkeeper was loaned out twice: first to VfB Lübeck, where he made his professional debut in the 3. Liga, and subsequently to SV Babelsberg 03, for whom he played a total of 26 matches in the Regionalliga Nordost. Even before his return to Union this summer, the club and player had agreed on a permanent transfer.
With the move to an ambitious environment in Rostock, the Berlin-born Stein now has the chance to further develop and take the next step in his career.
Reactions to the move
“Saying goodbye to Köpenick really isn’t easy for me, as Union and Berlin have been my home for many years,” said Stein on the announcement of his new club. “I’ve enjoyed a good education here and have been able to work in an environment that has supported and encouraged me. The two loan spells have shown me how important regular playing time is for my development and how much I want to take on more responsibility on the pitch. Now I’m looking forward to the challenge in Rostock, to a new stadium, new teammates and the chance to prove myself again.”
Union’s director of men’s professional football, Horst Heldt, meanwhile, had this to say of the keeper’s move. “Yannic has developed very well with us over many years and has always worked professionally. The loan spells have given him important experience, but at the same time it was clear that, for his next step, he needs regular playing time at a high level. We understood his desire for a new challenge and together found a solution that makes sense for all parties. We thank Yannic for his commitment to Union and wish him all the best in Rostock, both on and off the pitch.”
