Contract Extension for Number One
Frederik Rönnow Staying at Union
1. FC Union Berlin can continue to rely on the qualities of Frederik Rönnow. The club and the Danish goalkeeper have agreed on an early extension of his contract.
Unioner of the Year, Penalty Specialist, Backbone in Goal
Since his transfer in 2021, Rönnow has become indispensable in the Union goal, and his statistics speak for themselves. His role as a penalty stopper is particularly impressive. In the 2024/25 season, Rönnow saved four out of five penalties – alongside St. Pauli's goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, the best among all the goalkeepers in the Bundsliga.
The one in the last minute in Frankfurt during the second half of last season remains unforgettable, securing three incredibly important points, as does his spectacular season opener in 2023/24, where he saved two spot-kicks against Mainz. In other statistics, he ranked last season with a save percentage of sixty-seven percent among the best keepers in the league. His speed and timing and fast reflexes, along with his strong presence on the field, make him a vital player to Union.
The 33 year old has been between the posts in 130 competitive matches, keeping a clean sheet thirty-eight times. His performances are also reflected in the recognition from the fans: They have voted the Dane "Union Footballer of the Year" three times in a row.
The reactions to the Contract Extension
"Union is not just a club for me, but a place where I am seen and appreciated not just as a player, but as a person. The closeness to the fans is something very special – you feel their support in every game, in every moment," said Rönnow on the signing of his new deal. "The unity in the team and the trust that is placed in me here mean a lot to me. That’s why I extended my contract: because Union feels like home to me – like a second family where I feel completely comfortable."
"Frederik is an outstanding goalkeeper who represents a key figure in our team with his quality, experience, and personality," added Horst heldt, Union's director of men's professional football. "We are very pleased that he continues to commit to Union. Together, we want to be successful in the future and rely on his support."
