Joint Press Release:

Foundation of the Women's Bundesliga FBL e.V.

The 14 German women’s top flight football clubs are organising collectively for the first time and are founding the Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V.

With the founding act on December 10 in Frankfurt am Main, the clubs of the Frauen-Bundesliga have set a milestone for the development of women's football.

1. FC Union Berlin, SV Werder Bremen, SGS Essen, Eintracht Frankfurt, SC Freiburg, Hamburger SV, TSG Hoffenheim, Carl Zeiss Jena, 1. FC Köln, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Bayern München, 1. FC Nürnberg, and VfL Wolfsburg have jointly founded the Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V. in Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt am Main. This has set a milestone in a unique process in German women's football. The collective organisation of the top-flight clubs signifies a joint decision to actively shape the future of German women's football sustainably, to realise its potential, and to maximize professionalism through significant investments.

The newly founded Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V. has also elected a three-member presidency during the founding act in accordance with the adopted statutes, with an elected president at its head. Katharina Kiel (Eintracht Frankfurt) was elected as the president. The presidency, which will represent the interests of the club association, is completed by the 1st vice president Veronica Saß (FC Bayern München) and the 2nd vice president Florian Zeutschler (SGS Essen). Following the founding act, the first constitutive meeting of the newly founded Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V. took place with representatives from all founding clubs.

With the founding, the league association and its presidency have begun their work, and will continue the process for the future of the Frauen-Bundesliga in their new role.

Katharina Kiel, president of Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V., said: “This day is historic for German women's football. For the first time, all top-flight clubs are coming together, combining their interests in a league association. For us, a process that we began together as clubs about one and a half years ago has reached a first peak. However, the founding is not an end, but the beginning of a strong, visible, and independent league. This act of unity of all 14 top-flight clubs is a sign of cohesion, responsibility, and a new beginning. Together, we want to further develop women's football based on a deep conviction, making it more professional and sustainable.

"We will conduct discussions with the German Football Association in this context without any pre-ordained results. Our decisions will always be made in the interest of a future-oriented league where the clubs shape the process. I also want to actively shape this in my future role as the president of Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V., which is a great honour for me and comes with personal responsibility. My thanks go to the clubs that have placed their trust in me, and whose unity and cohesion should continue to be one, if not the greatest strength of our league in the future.”

Veronica Saß, 1st vice president of Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V., agreed, saying: “Today is of great significance for women's football in Germany. Our common goal is to better meet the growing demands and increasing popularity and to establish the Bundesliga on a future-proof foundation. We at FC Bayern München are convinced that the founding of the FBL e.V. is the right step towards this and are therefore also ready to take on responsibility and actively contribute to the work of the presidency. I look forward to working together in the presidency and thank the clubs for their trust. Together we will overcome the challenges that lie ahead of us. The previous process has shown that we are capable of achieving this together.”

Florian Zeutschler, 2nd vice president of Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V., continued: “The founding of the Frauen-Bundesliga FBL e.V. is the success of a constructive collaboration among all clubs over the past one and a half years, and is a significant step towards offering professional women's football in all areas in Germany and to establish it on a financially stable basis. It is our clear mandate to master the balancing act between maximum professionalisation and the value of women's football with its identity.

"As a club, we have already taken a clear stance on the issues of youth development and sustainable management in recent years, celebrating considerable successes. In particular, we want to continue to contribute to the training of young talents in terms of quantity and quality in the future. With this focus, we have recently been able to push our limits in a growing league and want to shape the future with this perspective as well. That we as a pure women's football club will have a place in the presidency is an impressive sign for women's football and an expression of a process in which the interests of all clubs were seen and considered. For this, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the other 13 clubs. The founding of the league association represents, not least, a turning point for us that we clearly desired, but it is also just the foundation from which we want to and will create something much bigger.”
