Review of the national matches:
End of the group stage in the Women’s Nations League
Shortly before the start of the European Championship 2025, the group stage of the Women’s Nations League has concluded. With Korina Janez, Fatma Sakar, and Athanasia Moraitou, three players from 1. FC Union Berlin were involved internationally and all faced each other in the same group.
The Active Players
Korina Janez managed to secure the fifth victory with the Slovenian national team in their fifth group match: In the 2-0 home win against Greece in Kranj, the midfielder of the Eisernen was substituted in the 78th minute. In the final clash for the group victory against Ireland, Slovenia lost 0-1, but due to the better goal difference, they still progressed. Janez was substituted in stoppage time in Cork. By winning the group, the Slovenian women are promoted to League A of the 2027 World Cup qualification.
Fatma Sakar did not play for Turkey in the penultimate group match against Ireland and saw the 1-2 defeat in Istanbul only from the bench. In the decisive duel against Greece, where it was about direct relegation from League B, the right-back then spent over 90 minutes on the field and was able to contribute to the 1-0 victory in Iraklio. Turkey finishes the group stage with six points in third place and will face the best group runners-up of League C in the Play-offs at the end of the year. In these matches, the fate of staying in League B will be decided.
Athanasia Moraitou played the full distance on the field in both concluding matches for Greece. Her team had to endure defeats against Slovenia (0-2) and Turkey (0-1). In the second match, Union's number 77 captained the team. Without a point, Greece is relegated as the bottom team in Group C for the 2027 World Cup Qualification.
World Cup Qualification
Through the Nations League, the teams can advance to the league phase of the World Cup qualification. This consists of three strength classes, League A (strongest) to League C (weakest). In the league phase, the four group winners of League A qualify directly for the World Cup. The others must compete in matches against the best from League B and C. The seven winners of this second round qualify directly for the World Cup, and the eighth winner participates in the intercontinental Play-offs.
