Bringing a Dash of Speed to the Left:

Derrick Köhn Joins Union

1. FC Union Berlin’s men’s team are strengthening the first team squad with the addition of Derrick Köhn. The 26-year-old left-back is making a permanent move from Galatasaray having already played 30 Bundesliga matches for SV Werder Bremen on loan last season.

Training at HSV, a breakthrough in Hanover

Köhn was born in Hamburg and found his way into the youth ranks of Hamburger SV via Bramfelder SV. There, he regularly played for the U19 Bundesliga team before moving to FC Bayern München in 2017. He matured into a regular player for their U23s, celebrated promotion to the 3. Liga in 2019 and gained European experience in the UEFA Youth League.

For the 2020/21 season, the fast full-back moved to Willem II in the Netherlands before, two years later, he returned to Germany and signed for Hannover 96. He impressed in the 2. Bundesliga with his attacking drive and goal-scoring threat, scoring eight goals and setting up twelve more in 53 appearances.

In February 2024, he moved to Galatasaray. Although he immediately established himself there, Köhn was loaned to Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen the following summer, scoring on his debut against 1. FSV Mainz 05. He will now join Union for the coming season.

Three facts about Derrick

  • In his very first half-season with Galatasaray, he celebrated winning the Turkish championship in 2024.

  • The left-footed player describes his own style of play as follows: ‘I'm very attacking, I like to dribble, look for the finish or the final pass. Defensively, I don't shy away from tackles and I'm uncompromising.’

  • He discovered the origin of his first name late. But his mother was inspired, watching the ZDF crime series, ‘Derrick.’ She liked the name so much that she gave it to her son.

The reactions to the transfer

"Union suit me – they’re a club with attitude, a clear vision and great team spirit. I want to contribute my qualities on the wing, and I'm convinced that they will fit in well with the team's style of play,” said Köhn on the completion of his move. “Now I'm excited about the team, the fans and the environment in Berlin and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everything there."

Union's director of professional football, Horst Heldt, added to this, saying: “Derrick brings pace, assertiveness and Bundesliga experience. We believe he can help our team right away, and he also fits in well with us in terms of character. With his flexibility and attacking instinct, he opens up additional options for us on the left side.”
