Weiß Wonder-Strike for the Opener
Union’s Women Draw 1-1 in Freiburg
1. FC Union Berlin’s women’s team fought for a deserved point on Saturday lunchtime away at SC Freiburg. Union went a goal up through Anna Weiß’s superb 16th minute strike, only to see Svenja Fölmli level for the hosts with four minutes of normal time remaining.

Weiß's beauty for the lead; Orschmann comes close
After both teams cautiously tested each other out in the first quarter of an hour, Anna Weiß made her mark in tremendous style in the 15th minute. Following a blocked corner, the ball fell to the full-backjust outside the box, from where she shot first time, crashing the ball into the top corner.
Freiburg sought an answer after the goal and had a promising opportunity in the 27th minute when Luca Birkholz and Lisa Kolb combined through the Union defence, but the pass from the latter to the far post was intercepted by Cara Bösl in goal. Soon after, Union had the biggest chance yet in the first half. Following a counterattack, Eileen Campbell set up her attacking teammate Dina Orschmann, who appeared free in front of SC goalkeeper Rebecca Adamczyk, but the keeper somehow managed to stop Orschmann's attempted nutmeg with the inside of her thigh.
In the final minutes of the first half, the hosts stepped up their pressure, but Union's defence held firm. Just before halftime, Bösl made a magnificent stop from Kolb, as she deflected the attempt from a tight angle.
Few chances after the break - Fölmli scores late to equalise.
The second half was a real battle of attrition, in which significant scoring were few and far between, from either side. Union focused on defending, holding the higher placed team at bay; Freiburg were reduced to occasional pot-shots. Union's only real chance came ofrom Dina Orschmann, whose shot was too central to trouble Rebecca Adamczyk after 65 minutes.
As the clock wound down, they held on, so was all the more disappointing when substitute, Svenja Fölmli scored the equaliser in the 85th minute from the edge of the box. It was a fine strike, but still seemed somewhat undeserved. Union fought til the end for the three points, but after the blow of their last minute goal conceded last weekend against Jena, they'd be more than happy with the point
Voices after the game
“We wanted to give something back to the fans today for the defeat last weekend. I believe we did many things well today. That’s why the late equalizer is all the more bitter, but in the end, every point in the league is important, and we will take this one point away from Freiburg,” explained goalscorer Anna Weiß after the match.
Samantha Steuerwald added: “In the end, today it’s a bit annoying because there was more to be had. Overall, it was a very heated and hard-fought game. I think we learned from the last few weeks and were able to implement some things we had planned. With a little more luck, we would have taken all three points.”
“It was a very combative game in which both teams gave nothing away. The draw is therefore ultimately fair, although we would of course have liked to maintain the lead until the end,” was the conclusion of head coach Ailien Poese.
