Early start by Ljubičić - Bénes adds to it in style
Union opened the match against SV 1908 Grün-Weiss Ahrensfelde with a lightning start. Livan Burcu took advantage of the space on the left, but his high cross seemed to be no problem for GWA goalkeeper Sven Reimann. Marin Ljubičić, however, playing as a center forward, had the right instinct and capitalised on the goalkeeper's error while attempting to catch the ball, giving Union a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play.
The home team's keeper made a better effort six minutes later when he held onto a powerful header from Leopold Querfeld after a corner kick. After 20 minutes, László Bénes was unmarked when he scored Union's second, giving the goalkeeper no chance. He picked up an cleared ball at the edge of the box and finished it off with a fine, technical volley into the net.
With significantly better weather than in yesterday's match, the Uguests were the dominant team, repeatedly trying to create space with fast combinations through the middle or supplying their strikers with crosses from the flanks. One of these was almost headed in for 3-0 by scorer Ljubičić in the 44th minute, but the ball sailed just past the post.
Defensively, the team around new goalkeeper Matheo Raab was called to action only rarely; the Grün-Weiß attacking efforts often got stuck at the midfield, leaving Union's defense plenty of time and space to advance their own play.
Fewer chances - more goals
Although a bit later than in the first half, it was still very soon after the break when Union re-opened the scoring. Danilho Doekhi found the advancing Andrik Markgraf in the GWA six-yard box with a high ball, whose assist Elias Ali converted powerfully under the crossbar. A few minutes later, Tom Rothes' shot from the edge of the box was heading towards the same corner, but this time the substitute keeper Glenn Böhme imanaged to prevent the goal. Just a few seconds later, he also came out best in a one-on-one with Union's Oliver Burke, who tried to chip him. After that, there were more attempts from Markgraf and again Rothe in quick succession, but due to the attentive defense of the hosts, it remained 3-0 for the time being.
After a less eventful phase, Janik Haberer got Union's next in the 71st minute. Following an assist from Tim Skarke, he placed the ball from 18 yards into the left corner. GWA's third keeper, Ruslan Yefanov, had to rpick the ball out of his own net just a few seconds later when he lost a duel against Ilyas Ansah, who rolled the ball easily to Oliver Burke. Burke made it 5-0 after seventy-five minutes. Aiming to score himself, Ansah dribbled down the left in the eighty-sixth minute and sought a low shot from a tight angle, but Yefanov was alert and saved it.
A few moments later, the referee ended the match with Union 5-0 winners.
Voices after the game
“We had three goals for today: to run as much as possible, create many scoring opportunities, and then score against the opponent's goal. So it was a good afternoon, especially in front of the many fans who support us everywhere,” stated goalscorer Marin Ljubičić after the final whistle.
“That was quite exhausting today. We have completed many conditioning sessions this week and most of us have now already played 90 minutes in the two. But that is all quite normal. We got through it well and no one got injured. It was a good conclusion to the week,” added Janik Haberer.
“It was about presenting ourselves in the region and in front of the fans, that is the main thing. There were many positive insights, especially the performances of the young players. All three really managed to stand out”, said assistant coach Sebastian Bönig after the match.
