Union pushes in the heat – Weidauer scores to take the lead.
In the opening minutes, both teams initially probed each other, with Dina Orschmann setting the first highlight for Union's women in the third minute: After a solo run in the final third, her powerful shot only grazed the crossbar of the hosts and went out of play.
After several balanced minutes and possession for both teams, it was the Green-Whites who became dangerous through Alexandra Popp’s header (14.) at the five-meter area. However, the ball landed centrally in the hands of FCU goalkeeper and today's captain Cara Bösl.
During the course of the match, there was a moment of calm for a few minutes, before Naika Reissner was sharply present on the left flank and took advantage of a failed clearance attempt by the VfL defense. After winning the ball, she laid it off for Sophie Weidauer in the penalty area of the hosts: The forward skillfully converted in the Wolfsburg goal (20.).
After the new score, Union's women continued to act more forcefully in the attack, but with overall less possession. A promising situation for the team of head coach Thomas Lerch came from Vivien Endemann, after the forward penetrated into the penalty area with a solo dribble and shot from close range. However, she was denied by Bösl, who made a confident save (37.).
Until the referee's halftime whistle, both teams took turns having phases of possession, but neither was able to capitalize on it.
More playing time for the wolves – travel expenses increased per head.
After the change of sides and some personnel changes for VfL Wolfsburg, the first fifteen minutes passed without any decisive actions.
In the 60th minute, Reissner then freed herself from the now pressing DFB-Pokal record winners from her own half: The forward supplied Eileen Campbell with a deep ball – through a successful combination, Reissner regained possession, but her cross found no taker.
Then it was the second-placed team of the Bundesliga season 2024/25 that failed to capitalize on their chance to equalize: The cross from the halfright position by Svenja Huth found Lineth Beerensteyn's head in the penalty area, but the round ball sailed just over the square of the guests (67.)
Union then had a double chance shortly after: Campbell with the assist to substitute Celine Frank, whose shot along the goal line was cleared by a Wolfsburg defender, and the follow-up shot landed out of play.
Union continued to defend with great effort and determination, with the substitute goalkeeper for the second half, Nadine Böhi, making several skilled saves.
In the 88th minute, the Unionerinnen struck again: Starting from a corner taken by Lisa Heiseler, Nele Bauereisen jumped up for a header and scored the ball unerringly in the net of the Wölfinnen to make it 2-0.
With loud fan chants from the traveling Union fans, the final minutes of the match passed, and the promoted team recorded their second victory of the summer preparation on their account.
Voices after the game
“With a 2-0 victory, one can definitely say that our plan worked very well. From front to back, we showed an excellent performance. I believe we have now arrived, but we could have played it a bit more calmly towards the end,” summarized Anna Weiß.
“I am really proud of us, how we performed as a team. It was great to win against Wolfsburg in such an atmosphere – we are ready for the league. During my parade, I just hoped to get to the ball when the striker turned again – it’s nice that I managed to do that,“ was the conclusion of Nadine Böhi after the final whistle.
“We wanted to see today how far we have come defensively, and when we look at that, we are very satisfied. We implemented many things well, we brought our identity as a team onto the pitch, and that against an opponent who is really formidable,” said assistant coach Sabrina Eckhoff upon her return to Wolfsburg.
