Tactical duel in Ronhof:
Fürth's dream goal too much for Union
The men's professional team of 1. FC Union Berlin suffered their first Friendly defeat of the current preparation against SpVgg Greuter Fürth. In a game with very few offensive scenes overall, Fürth's Branimir Hrgota was the only goalscorer at 0-1 (62.).

Goal: 0-1 Hrgota (54.)
Much tactics on both sides – little offensive threat in front of the goals.
The match began with a real bang after almost three minutes in the sultry Ronhof of Fürth: Branimir Hrgota was sent into the Unioner's penalty area with a chip, and after his quick turn and shot, only a strong reflex from goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow prevented an early deficit. The ball hit the post and was subsequently cleared from the danger zone. While the Eisernen gradually took control of the game, it was again the hosts in the 14th minute who registered the next chance. Jannik Dehm initially broke through on the right side, and his subsequent low cross found Reno Münz on the other side. However, the direct shot from the advancing right-back disappeared into Rönnow's arms.
Both sides largely neutralized each other in the further phases of the first half, resulting in a flow of play only emerging in a few moments. Just moments before the break, the spectators saw a good attempt from the Union offensive. Josip Juranovic, active on the left side today, found Ilyas Ansah with a cross in the opponent's six-yard box. However, his shot from close range posed no problem for Fürth goalkeeper Pelle Boevink.
Shortly after, the first half ended with a score of 0-0.
Hrgota artistically – Unioners in trouble
The second half began with a similar intensity as the first. This time, however, it was the Eisernen who came close to scoring twice in the 48th minute. First, Josip Juranović's direct free kick was saved by Boevink, and the follow-up shot from the substituted Christopher Trimmel hit the outside netting.
Fürth's Hrgota, who had previously hit the post, felt his work was not done and delivered the first goal after 54 minutes, a moment of artistic brilliance as well. Danilho Doekhi’s attempt to clear a free kick landed at the edge of the penalty area on the ready foot of the number 10, and the ball flew behind Frederik Rönnow into the net a few seconds later, unstoppable.
The team led by captain Christopher Trimmel visibly showed the intense work from their training camp after conceding the goal; nonetheless, they attempted to achieve success with quick combinations down the flanks. As a result of one of these forays, a shot by Tim Skarke nearly brought the equalizer, but many defensive legs prevented the ball from finding the back of the net (75.).
The opportunity for 2-0 was missed by the Kleeblätter in the 90th minute when Omar Sillah was denied. His solo run towards the goal was halted by Lucas Tousart and Diogo Leite with well-timed tackles. A few moments later, the match ended with a score of 0-1 from the perspective of the Eisernen.
Voices after the match
“We are in training camp and have completed two days with two sessions each, so our legs are quite heavy. Nevertheless, it's good that we got some playing time today. Fürth starts in the league next week, so it was clear that they would be in good form today,” analyzed Danilho Doekhi after the match.
“Even though we had a few opportunities, we want to create more chances. We have trained hard and will continue to work hard to achieve this. It is still early in the preparation, but overall we are on a good path,” added Robert Skov.
“We are in preparation and trying things out. In the game, we allowed very little, but then we conceded a ‘Goal of the Month’ against us. For me, it was a normal friendly and it wouldn’t have been any different if we had won 1-0. The third week of preparation is often when you fall into the first slump; the boys did well today,” was the conclusion of head coach Steffen Baumgart.
