Clear chance ratio – Dream goal by Reissner

The fourth duel between the two teams within the last two years was opened by Union’s women. They started with a lot of pressure and drive forward into the match, and so Sophie Weidauer had the first shot of the game - which, however, was too central for the goalkeeper of the Polish champions 2024. The second good opportunity for Union’s women was a Schneider cross from the right, which, however, found no recipient in the penalty area (9.). The dominant guests set further offensive accents as a result of a free kick by Judith Steinert, which Eileen Campbell could not convert efficiently (13.). After a corner kick (17.), Tomke Schneider's header landed safely in the hands of the opposing goalkeeper Radkiewicz. The first opportunity for the hosts arose from a long-range shot by Alexis Legowski (21.), where Union’s goalkeeper Cara Bösl was tested and confidently parried the ball out of play.

In the 23rd minute, Union’s women were rewarded on the opposite side. Following a pass from Weidauer, Naika Reissner took a shot from 22 meters and sent the ball with her left foot into the right upper corner of the Blue-Red goal. Athanasia Moraitou extended the clear chance ratio with a shot in the 29th minute, but the ball sailed well over the crossbar.

Union continued to defend solidly and did not allow any opposing chances. After just over half an hour, Korina Janez and Anna Weiß came on for Moraitou and Steinert. Shortly thereafter, Union’s goalkeeper Bösl was called upon for a ball played deep by the Poles, demonstrating alertness and clearing the ball out of play with her foot.

A little later, the Eisernen Ladies combined dangerously deep. However, the Reissner-Campbell combination ended just wide of the right goal post of the Polish top team. Seconds later (42.), Tomke Schneider capitalized on a failed clearance attempt by the hosts in their own penalty area, but the goal was ruled offside by the referee.

Just before the halftime whistle (44.), the hosts made themselves known with a good opportunity: a low shot by Dyguś narrowly missed the goal of Union’s women on the left side. Shortly thereafter, the halftime whistle blew.

Eventful game – Union women secure their first win

In the first minutes after the restart, there were no notable goal chances on either side, but Pogon was now the team with more drive forward. The substituted FCU goalkeeper Melanie Wagner passed the reaction test (54.) with a solid save from a header by the home team. Immediately afterwards, there was another Polish attack down the right side, the cross from Świrska was gratefully accepted by Alicja Dyguś with a header and turned into the bottom right corner for the equalizer.

Union’s captain Lisa Heiseler had a response ready (56.), but the home team's goalkeeper prevented the leading goal with a successful flying save. Tomke Schneider broke through on the left wing, the cross was gratefully accepted by Heiseler and the ball was precisely pushed into the left corner for a new score of 1-2 (65.). Not long after, it was Campbell who extended the lead for the Eisernen: Katja Orschmann assisted the attack with a long ball, which Campbell unhesitatingly sent into the net of the Blue-Reds with a volley from just a few meters (67.).

Between the clouds, the sun appeared, as did the Polish first division team: After the Union women failed to clear a cross from the left side in front of their own goal, Okoniewska scored the connection goal (67.).

The fresh wind from the many substitutions on both sides was noticeable, and both teams made attacking moves afterwards. However, due to a double chance from Bauereisen (67.) and Janez (72.), the Poese team applied more pressure in front of the opponent's goal. The turbulent game lost momentum in the final phase, and Okoniewska had the best opportunity to equalize in the 84th minute, but her shot flew harmlessly over the Union goal.

Nothing changed in the score until the referee's final whistle, and thus the professional team of women from 1. FC Union Berlin returned to Köpenick with the first victory of the 2025/26 season.

Voices after the game

“For me, it was something very special to be on the pitch for Union for the first time today. I think we did quite well for the first Friendly. It's always nice when I play in my home country. We are taking some aspects from the game with us for the training camp,” summarized the Polish national player Tanja Pawollek.

“It was very nice that after two weeks of preparation with the team, we finally played our first match. I am very happy that I was able to score right away. Just before, Dina told me that Katja can play those long balls and that I should make a run in behind. It’s great that it worked out immediately,” said the debut goalscorer Eileen Campbell.

Ailien Poese commented on the Friendly success: “We saw quite a bit today that we have discussed in the last few days. As a team, we invested a lot in offensive processes, and that was noticeable. However, there were also several things that we will take with us to the training camp and work on. We won 3-2, so we are initially satisfied. We now have material to work on a lot more.”

Outlook for the coming days:

After today's match, the women of Union will head to their summer training camp in Klosterpforte on Tuesday, 05.08.2025. In East Westphalia, the team led by Ailien Poese will continue their intensive preparation for six days. On the return journey, the Eisernen Ladies will play a Friendly against VfL Wolfsburg at the AOK-Stadion on Sunday, 10.08.2025. Tickets for the match are available in the ticket shop of VfL Wolfsburg.
