Union Berlin to toast 125 years of First Vienna FC

1. FC Union Berlin have been invited by Austria's oldest football club, First Vienna, to mark their 125th anniversary on Wednesday July 17 at the Stadion Hohe Warte.

First Austrian Club:

First Vienna were founded on August 22, 1894. Based in Austria's capital, First Vienna play their home games at the Stadion Hohe Warte, which at one point was one of Europe's largest stadiums and used to host the Austrian national team to crowds of 85,000. Today, the ground takes about 7,200 but still retains a historic and cultural feel.

Since 2017/18, First Vienna have played in the Austrian fifth tier. Nevertheless, the club's history is glittering, which coincides with Austria's impressive spell around the 1930s. First Vienna have won the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian domestic cups, whilst also winning the German Cup in 1943. In 1931, the club won the Mitropa Cup, the predecessor of the European Cup for clubs in Central Europe.

Review: Union pick up two 3-0 wins

On Friday and Saturday, Union Berlin put their fitness to the test against 2.Liga opposition from Austria. SV Ried were swept aside 3-0 with a double from Grischa Prömel and an opener from Marvin Friedrich. Urs Fischer's team were met with a tougher test on Saturday against Blau-Weiß Linz, who are coached by Goran Djuricin. But in the second half, the Köpenick club's quality came through with strikes from Julius Kade, Sebastian Polter and Marcel Hartel.
